- What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a throat infection caused by bacteria known as Group A Streptococcus. This bacteria lives in the nose and throat and can spread easily. While strep is a mild infection, it can be painful. Some common symptoms of strep throat include:
- Fever
- Pain when swallowing
- A sore throat that starts quickly
- Red, swollen tonsils
- Tiny and red spots on the roof of the mouth
- Swollen lymph nodes
- It usually takes two to five days for someone exposed to this bacteria to get sick.
- Treating a sore throat
Your visit to University Urgent Care starts with a physical exam that looks at your ears, nasal passages, and your throat. We will also feel your neck to look for swollen glands. A strep test that includes a throat swab to get a sample can be done. A rapid antigen test can give a result within a few minutes; however, a more reliable test can be sent to a lab to get results in a day or two. If you don’t have strep, your sore throat is most likely caused by a viral infection, which doesn’t usually need medical treatment. Over-the-counter pain medications can help ease your symptoms. If your sore throat is caused by a bacterial infection, you will be prescribed antibiotics.
