WHAT ARE ALLERGIES AND REACTIONS?
Allergic reactions are caused when the immune system, believing that a substance is a threat, attempts to fight it off. Reactions can range from a rash and an upset stomach to hives and the closure of the airway. This severe reaction is called anaphylactic shock and is an emergency situation.
WHAT ARE SEASONAL ALLERGIES?
Seasonal allergies are caused by environmental factors such as tree pollen, and can occur in any season.
WHAT ARE FOOD ALLERGIES?
Food allergies are very common among adults and children of all ages. The most common food allergies are shellfish, dairy, eggs, peanuts and tree nuts, wheat, and soy.
WHAT ARE ANIMAL ALLERGIES?
Animal allergies are highly common, involving a reaction when in contact with the pelt or hair of an animal. The most common animal allergies are to dogs, cats, and horses.
WHAT ARE INSECT BITES AND STINGS?
Most commonly caused by bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants, allergies to insect bites can quite often be severe in nature.
WHAT ARE CHEMICAL ALLERGIES?
Chemical allergies are caused by exposure to some cleaning agents, as well as perfumes, creams, detergents, shampoos, and more. These can cause mild to severe allergic reactions.
WHAT ARE MEDICATION ALLERGIES?
Not unlike reactions to certain foods, many people experience sensitivities and allergies in response to certain medications. The most common medication allergy is to penicillin, but there are a number of medications which have caused an allergic response.
WHAT IS SINUSITIS?
A sinus infection (sinusitis) is a painful inflammation of the sinuses, which are located in various spots around the face. This infection blocks the flow of mucus to the back of the throat, causing swelling and pain. Those with allergies, weak immune systems, nasal passage deformities, and nasal polyps are at an increased risk of suffering from sinus infections. The following symptoms may indicate a sinus infection:
- Headaches (generally frontal)
- Tenderness of the face
- Coughing
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Redness
- Runny nose
- Nasal stuffiness or congestion
- Discolored nasal discharge (usually green)
- Pain in the teeth
- Bad breath
WHO IS AT RISK FOR SINUS INFECTIONS AND ALLERGIES?
Sinus infections and allergic reactions are similar in their varying degrees of severity. Each person’s symptoms may be unique. Mild symptoms such as sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, and headache are not of great threat to your health. However, severe allergic reactions that involve trouble breathing are life threatening and should be handled as such. Epinephrine will need to be administered during a severe allergic reaction to relax the muscles and open the airways. Generally speaking, those who are aware of their severe allergies should keep an epinephrine-injecting device with them at all times.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WITH ALLERGY SINUS TREATMENT?
Mild allergies and sinus infections can typically be treated at home. However, severe symptoms of either condition should be medically attended to. If a sinus infection lasts longer than eight weeks, you should seek medical treatment, as some sinus infections can spread to the bones or to the brain in severe cases. For allergic reactions where sudden and severe symptoms are present, seek treatment immediately at University Urgent Care, especially if these symptoms include difficulty breathing.
