WHAT ARE UPPER RESPIRATORY AND URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS?
Our team of emergency care professionals treats a range of infections and disorders that can harm the body and make living comfortably more difficult. Two of the most common issues we treat in individuals of all ages are upper respiratory infections (URIs) and bladder infections.
Upper respiratory infections affect the main components of a person’s upper airway. This structure comprises the sinuses, nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and throat, all of which help us to breathe by directing air through the upper respiratory system. Any of these components can become infected at any time and typically manifest as the common cold. While they’re more common in winter and fall, URIs can develop at any time.
Bladder infections, another problem we treat at our Fort Worth, TX office, is the most common type of urinary tract infection (UTI) and affects millions of people each year. Some think bladder infections are synonymous with UTIs, but this is not the case. All bladder infections are a type of UTI, but not all urinary tract infections are bladder infections. While the body naturally removes bacteria by flushing it out during urination, bladder infections occur when the bacteria attach to the bladder wall and multiply quickly.
At University Urgent Care, our team of medical professionals offers simple and effective solutions to address both of these types of infections for many individuals each year. If you’ve noticed any signs of a bladder or upper respiratory infection, get in touch with our office or stop by for a same-day appointment.
Certain infections that fall outside the scope of our urgent care services may necessitate referral to an emergency room. If you are experiencing difficulties in breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or chest pain unrelated to coughing, please call 9-1-1 immediately or seek care at an Emergency facility.
HOW ARE THESE INFECTIONS TREATED?
When you notice the potential signs of a bladder or upper respiratory infection, our team at University Urgent Care is here to identify the issue and help you achieve relief by treating your condition.
To detect a bladder infection, a member of our team will run a urinalysis to look for bacteria, nitrites, and red or white blood cells. Based on the outcomes of your diagnostic and the severity of your UTI, we will provide you with personalized treatment options to address and fight your infection. We may prescribe antibiotics and urge you to stay hydrated to help flush out the bacteria.
To identify an upper respiratory infection, we will perform a physical examination to get an idea of your overall health. In some cases, a throat swab with antigen detection or a neck x-ray may be done to fully diagnose the problem. Once we have determined that you’re suffering from an upper respiratory infection, we will select treatment options to restore your health.
There are a number of home remedies that patients can use to address both bladder and upper respiratory infections, but receiving antibiotics and medical care is usually the best way to expedite the healing process and improve your health quickly and efficiently.
