How do you get coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a respiratory illness spread through droplets in the air from an infected person. These droplets enter the eyes, nose, or mouth and infect you. At University Urgent Care, we offer diagnostic testing for those who may be exhibiting coronavirus symptoms, or who have been exposed to someone who has recently been diagnosed with COVID-19.

What are coronavirus symptoms?

Those infected with coronavirus have many different symptoms, and some individuals don’t experience symptoms at all. Common symptoms of coronavirus include:

  • Coughing

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Headache

  • Sore throat

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Diarrhea

  • Sudden loss of taste or smell

When you’re experiencing any symptoms of the coronavirus, you should be tested immediately at our Fort Worth, TX urgent care center.

Test for coronavirus in Fort Worth, TX

There are two types of diagnostic tests we use to test for coronavirus in Fort Worth, TX:

  1. Viral testing: The viral test detects an existing infection. This test uses nasal swab testing where a soft-tipped swab is placed into the nostril to collect secretions from the back of the nose and upper throat. The virus can be detected two to three days after exposure to coronavirus. Most of our patients receive their results in three to five days.

  2. Antibody testing: Antibody testing determines if someone had coronavirus previously based on the antibodies found in their blood. We will take a sample of your blood to look for immunoglobulin M (iGm) and immunoglobulin G (igG). The presence of these antibodies tells us if your body has fought off coronavirus and if you are a carrier of COVID-19. This test can’t detect antibodies until at least ten days after you were exposed. You can expect results within two to four days, and most major insurance providers will cover this test for free.

At University Urgent Care, we perform coronavirus testing to anyone who has experienced symptoms of COVID-19 a few weeks prior and were unable to be tested or who were around someone who has tested positive. After visiting our urgent care center, you don’t have to come back for your results. Our staff will call you with your results. We recommend that any patient who has had coronavirus testing at our facility self-quarantines until they receive their results.

Coronavirus prevention tips

To reduce your chances of catching coronavirus, you should:

  • Wash your hands often: Washing your hands often for at least 20 seconds reduces your risk of catching coronavirus.

  • Use hand sanitizer: When soap and water aren’t available to you, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol to remove germs. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them until they are completely dry.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth: Since this is where the virus enters the body, limit touching your face.

  • Avoid close contact with others: Remain six feet away from other people, regardless of whether they’re sick or not.

  • Wear face coverings: Wearing a cloth face covering is important, regardless of whether or not you’re sick or those around you are sick. Do not put a mask on anyone under the age of two, or who has trouble breathing.

  • Maintain a clean home: Clean and disinfect tables, light switches, countertops, doorknobs, phones, toilets, faucets, and sinks daily to prevent surface contamination.

  • Watch for symptoms: Watch for common symptoms of coronavirus so you can be tested quickly.
