WHAT ARE PINK EYE AND STYES?

While lesions can be uncomfortable and inconvenient regardless of where they emerge, conditions that affect the eyes can be that much more painful and difficult to deal with. Among the many infections that could impact the eyes, pink eye and styes tend to be the most common. Sometimes confused for one another, both of these issues can cause similar symptoms to emerge, such as redness, inflammation, and itching or a rough, gritty feeling in the eye. The best way to tell pink eye apart from a stye is to take into account the appearance of the sclera (the white portion of the eye). If the sclera is bright pink or red in color, you may have pink eye. Meanwhile, if your eyelids are swollen, but your sclera is still mostly white, you are likely suffering from a stye.

In order to have your condition accurately diagnosed, it’s important to seek medical guidance anytime you notice something abnormal with your eyes, whether it’s seemingly less urgent (like excess tearing or puffiness) or something more uncomfortable (such as pain or pus leakage). At University Urgent Care in Fort Worth, TX, our emergency treatment specialists are capable of distinguishing these two infections from each other and providing patients of all ages with the care they need to restore their comfort and achieve relief.

Certain eye aliments fall outside the scope of our urgent care services may necessitate referral to an emergency room. If you are experiencing difficulties in breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or chest pain unrelated to coughing, please call 9-1-1 immediately or seek care at an Emergency facility.

Symptoms of Pink Eye

Think you may have pink eye? Here are some common symptoms that may indicate you may want to seek treatment.

  • Pink or red color in the white of the eye(s)
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva (the thin layer that lines the white part of the eye and the inside of the eyelid) and/or eyelids
  • Increased tear production
  • Feeling like a foreign body is in the eye(s) or an urge to rub the eye(s)
  • Itching, irritation, and/or burning
  • Discharge (pus or mucus)
  • Crusting of eyelids or lashes, especially in the morning
  • Contact lenses that feel uncomfortable and/or do not stay in place on the eye

HOW DO YOU CURE PINK EYE AND STYES?

Since pink eye and styes are separate issues, they are addressed using different approaches. While pink eye can sometimes clear on its own, it’s important to have this problem looked into if the patient is an infant, immunocompromised, has a current eye injury that could be worsened by pink eye, experiencing symptoms that are not dissipating, or has intense pain or discomfort in the eyes. To determine the type of care you require, our team will first determine which form of conjunctivitis (pink eye) you have: allergic, bacterial, viral, or irritant. Allergic conjunctivitis can be effectively treated with eye drops while bacterial pink eye can be addressed with antibiotics. Viral conjunctivitis is the most common form and will usually go away on its own after 2 – 3 weeks, but our team will likely prescribe antiviral medication to help speed along the process.

Styes develop when an eyelash follicle becomes infected and causes a lesion or bump to develop. If you notice significant pain or swelling on your eyelid as the result of a stye, we advise you to seek care as soon as you can. While patients can ease some of the puffiness and discomfort with home remedies (such as applying a warm compress to the area for 10 – 15 minutes at a time, up to five times a day), these may not always be enough to completely alleviate the issue. The longer you have a stye, the more it will get in the way of your life and prevent you from even being able to wear contacts or makeup. At our Fort Worth office, a member of our knowledgeable team will carefully assess the area and prescribe the correct antibiotics to help take care of the issue.
